2008 Lake Breeze 'Bullant' Cabernet Merlot
Friday, July 2, 2010 at 10:45AM I've been in Langhorne Creek a couple of times in the past month or so, firstly as part of a Tasting Australia jaunt around the Fleurieu and environs and once for Quaff favourite Bleasdale's 160th celebrations. I caught up with Greg Follett from Lake's Breeze and chatted about a range of things. He mentioned this newish range and given the quality and value that his reds represent (The Lake Breeze 'Bernoota' Shiraz Cabernet is a regular contender for Best Value Red in Australia around the $22 price point.) I made a note that it might fit in nicely for this year's Quaff. To my delight it came up tops in one of my recent (blind) tastings.
The 2008 Lake Breeze 'Bullant' Cab Merlot has all the soft, fleshiness that you'd expect of a Langhorne Creek red, plus the ripe sweet redcurrant and blackberry flavours. There's a plushness about the wine that's rare at this price and a gentle grippy edge.
I wondered what 'bullant' meant and discovered on the website that it's named for the bull ants that harass the vineyard workers. That's a first!
