2009 Moppity 'Lock and Key' Riesling

This wine came up really well in a recent tasting. My first reaction on discovering its provenance was 'Riesling from Hilltops'! On reflection, it can be pretty chilly in those hilly areas around the cherry-growing orchards of Young in southern New South Wales, a bit more than an hour's drive from Canberra.

Moppity is a fascinating story. In 2004, Jason and Alecia Brown bought a vineyard with 35 year old vines on Moppity Road 12 kilometres south east of Young at 600 metres on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range. The quality of the vineyard was underlined when last year's Jimmy Watson Trophy was substantially sourced from there.

The Browns were hit by the failure of new producer Cooper Coffman and the global financial crises – and left with a great deal of decent wine in tank. The Moppity label has been doing well but there was a surfeit of wine. They took a gamble, mortgaged their house in Canberra, and bottled the surplus under the Lock and Key label (a reference to Jason's Second Fleet ancestry). The price is low to help move the wines.

So far, I've also seen the 2008 Lock and Key Chardonnay and liked its complexity, depth and length of flavour (and rate it Good to Bloody Good) the 2008 Lock and Key Cabernet Sauvignon, a soft, easy-drinking fruity style with redcurrant and dark plum flavours (rated Good). I've had very good reports of the 2008 Lock and Key Shiraz  and will pass on my reaction when I've tasted it.

In the meantime, the 2009 Moppity 'Lock and Key' Riesling has rich and powerful lemon, limey flavours, a pleasing mouthfeel, and a freshing clean zingy finish. Good value.

Jason Brown says re distribution

Our coverage in NSW and ACT is excellent and with Alex Hudak on board in Perth we already have good commitments from stockists there. We have an agent starting in Qld in the next few weeks but we haven’t really scratched the surface in SA or Vic yet. That said, our distribution has been evolving quite rapidly.
