Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 7:15AM When Houghton took over Amberley on buying Goundrey from the Jack Bendat empire, it gave them a base in the more northerly part of the Margaret River, in the locale of Yallingup. There's an attractive cellar door and some of the prettiest winery grounds in the region and a decent restaurant. It's certainly a good place to visit. The purchase of Amberley was particularly useful as it meant access to their vineyards and those of the growers who had been contracted to Amberley. Houghton have made some smart wines under the Amberley label.
This wine was known as 'Chimney Brush' and featured a perfectly frightful label. This is cleaner, brighter and more modern and works well on this entry-level offering. It should be readily available and at even better prices than I've quoted here. Great value for a regional red from the Margaret River.
The 2008 Amberley Shiraz is light to medium-bodied, has intense raspberry, mulberry and dark plum flavours, smooth texture, moderate tannins and a clean, fresh finish. Importantly, it's is approachable and delightful current drinking.
