2008 De Bortoli 'Deen Vat 9' Cabernet Sauvignon
Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 5:26PM I don't know what it is about De Bortoli - but they know how to make quaffing wines. Well, I probably do know what it is. Or at least I've got some clues. They obviously have a very impressive team working out of Griffith in the Riverina. Darren and the De Bortoli family have a clear belief in the importance of producing quality wines, no matter what the price point. There's refusal to compromise and attention to detail in the vineyard and the winery. Otherwise, the kind of strike rate they are getting at present would just not be possible. This week, I've been tasting cabernet sauvignon (there's one tasting to go tomorrow) but I'll have looked at 90 reds for the week. This has been the clear stand out of the budget-priced wines. As always, I was tasting blind and so had no idea that my favourite (and that of the tasting panel) was the current vintage Deen de Bortoli Vat 9 Cabernet. So the message is that Quaff's 2010 Winery of the Year is still on fire and appears incapable of doing anything wrong.
The thing that stood out with the 2008 De Bortoli ' Deen Vat 9' Cabernet was its velvety texture and balance. It is fragrant with some floral notes, quite beguiling for a quaffing red, has ripe sweet blackcurrant and dark plum flavours, wonderful smoothness on the palate and fine, ripe tannins to on a gentle lingering finish.
