2008 Tyrrells 'Old Winery' Shiraz

Well, this great family company is more than 150 years old and one of the mainstays of the Hunter region. They make stunning semillon under a wide range of labels and some superlative shiraz. Their Chief Winemaker, Andrew Spinaze, was Gourmet Traveller Wine's Winemaker of the Year in 2004 and so is one of the finest on the planet. I bumped into Peter Lane and the crew from Tyrrells in Heathcote last week having lunch (as I was) at the Cellar Store in the main street. This entry level shiraz is predominantly from Heathcote (83%) with the rest from McLaren Vale where Tyrrells have had a long-time presence. When you think of how much most Heathcote shiraz cost, this is remarkable – especially as it's a Bloody Good red.

I loved the soft, round fleshy (almost syrupy) texture of the 2008 Tyrrells 'Old Winery' Shiraz, its ripe, sweet, raspberry and blackberry flavours and pleasing approachability.
