Wyndham Estate 'Bin 555' Sparkling Shiraz

It was an important occasion for our tasting panel. JJ was away in Bali. Moss Brothers winemaker, Nav Singh, back from a visit to India had picked up a fresh young kid in Margaret River and had cooked his mother's Goat Curry recipe for dinner afterwards. Aldersyde winemaker, Larissa Bray, was making her last appearance at a tasting before vintage. Nav's wife, bright young wine writer Louise Radman was over from Adelaide. Our trusty tough chairman, Nev Phillips, was allowing unprecedent licence for gossip between brackets. A big day in all respects.

Given Nav's goat curry, an opening bracket of expensive sparkling shiraz seemed called for. And delivered. I'm not sure how the Wyndham 'Bin 555' found its way into the bracket. I think that I was under the impression that it was $25 a bottle. Anyway, it scored brilliantly across the board and was the top pointed wine. I didn't find out its price until several days later.

Wyndham Estate 'Bin 555' Sparkling Shiraz is fabulously textural, rich, powerful and creamy with dense blackberry, dark plum pudding flavours, a hint of chocolate, and a seemingly dry finish that is smooth and long. Perfect with the great goat curry: a little bit less so with the extra chilli-hot aubergine curry.

The price is amazing. I can't believe there is better value in the market place.
