2007 Casillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon
Friday, September 25, 2009 at 12:00PM I did a tasting of imported wines yesterday and found this. It should have been tasted for Quaff but, in even the most orderly offices (I can't take any credit), slips will happen. I missed this. While it's a shame that it wasn't in Quaff, subscribers to the website stand to benefit.
I was tasting this with more expensive reds and so was bowled over by its quality when I realised how cheap it was. The wine is made by the giant Chilean wine company, Conchya y Toro, in considerable volumes and is widely available from its importers, Vintage Cellars. I found the 2007 Casillero del Diablo Cabernet delightfully fragrant with floral notes and some wild dried herb characters, dark berry flavours, silky smooth texture and savoury, dry chewy tannins. It will be better with a robust dish that is accompanied by plenty of juice or sauce - perhaps a beef stew (boeuf en daube) or a lamb roast with a rich gravy.
