2008 De Bortoli 'Sacred Hill' Shiraz Cabernet

This wins my Best Red under $10 award in Quaff 2010 and is placed in Quaff's Top 20 wines of the year. Last week I was in Sydney for the launch of First Families of Wine, a promotional or marketing group consisting of a dozen of our finest wine families. Many of them do brilliantly in Quaff each year: De Bortoli, Yalumba, Brown Brothers, D'Arenberg, McWilliams, Taylors, Tyrrells and Tahbilk. The others including Campbells, Henschke, Howard Park and Jim Barry are represented when their portfolio allows. Their aim is to promote the importance of family and the notion that Australia makes outstanding wine at all levels.

The guys at De Bortoli in the Riverina usually come up with one great quaffer each year under this budget-priced label - and it seems to vary from year to year. They have excelled themselves this year. It's a light to medium-bodied red that is soft, round, and silky smooth with ripe redcurrant and blackberry flavours, and moderate, balanced tannins. One of the panel members described it as 'bouncy'.
