2008 Deakin Estate Viognier

Every now and then a wine slips under the radar at a winery and, after it's been released, the winemaking team (or more likely the marketers if it's a sizeable company) wonder how they put it out at that price. This is one such wine. When someone like me notices that a $10 viognier has won a gold at the Sydney Show, he keeps an eye out for it to appear in the new release tastings. I saw it in one of my Quaff tastings and all of the panel loved it. The panel chairman ordered three cases immediately. (My pal in London, Joanna Simon, also wrote it up on her website.)

The 2008 Deakin Estate Viognier is soft round and fleshy with onion skin, pear, even anise characters, perhaps a hint of apricot kernel, all quite dry and savoury, finishing with a pleasing dry grip. A great food wine - perhaps with lightly seared scallops or stir-fried prawns - that dry savoury character makes for an ideal match. I don't often say this but the wine could have sold for twice the price and no-one would have objected.

As my brother Paul far-too-often reminds me, it's ok to rave on about a wine (he'd drink this with freshly caught whiting fillets, lightly pan-fried) but getting the good wines is the difficult bit. It is available at Dan Murphy stores in all states except WA. In WA, you can ask for it and they will order it from the winery. If you're desparate, try Anna at aaldridge@wingara.com.au

Rating: Bloody Good

Cost: $ 10

Available from Dan Murphy stores in all Australian states (WA is trickier). www.deakinestate.com.au

I'm in WA and found this at Dan Murphy's, so that problem may have been solved. It was going for something crazy like $8. It's a fantastic wine, even without food.
