2009 Woop Woop Verdelho
Friday, June 26, 2009 at 1:42PM I'm not sure that I'd like to serve a bottle of Woop Woop wines to an overseas visitor. It's not that I wouldn't mind explaining to them the idea of woop woop: it is a quintessentially Australian idea / notion / concept / place. Maybe it'll a little too Australian a name. Look, it is arresting / attention-grabbing. And when the wine jumps out of the glass like this and grabs you by the collar, it's the right kind of attention-grabbing. It's made by Ben Riggs and Tony Parkinson (of Penny's Hill) and the Galvanised Wine Group which have their headquarters just next to Woodstock in the heart of the McLaren Vale. The 2009 Woop Woop Verdelho is a ripping good quaffer - straight-forward with ripe sweet fruit, juicy and vibrant, exhuberant, fresh and clean. If I thought I'd get away with it, I'd mutter that it's such a good verdelho it could have come from Western Australia. But I wouldn't. So I won't. (Pity.) Make sure you swirl it is your big glass and sniff, sniff, sniff. It does have glorious ripe fruit salad, pineapple and passionfruit aromas and these follow through on to the palate.
