2008 De Bortoli 'Montage' Cabernet Merlot
Friday, June 19, 2009 at 12:49PM I was looking at a selection of cabernet merlot for Quaff this week. Two of the wines that came up were both made by De Bortoli - this 'Montage' and 'Windy Peak' (sourced from the Yarra and a little more expensive). Frankly, there's not much between them in quality terms. I've chosen to write up the Montage because it's the cheaper. The Windy Peak has plenty of flavour, is well-made, has a bit more body and structure and is the more substantial wine. This 'Montage' is one of the modest quaffers from the Riverina that De Bortoli handle so well. There's heaps of flavour here, medium body, lots of redcurrant and blackberry fruit, terrific fleshy texture, and decent balance. There's nothing complicated, just a clean, fresh well-made red: a quintessential quaffer.
