2008 Sieur de Camandieu Viognier
Friday, April 17, 2009 at 7:50AM I spent a couple of days in Sydney a few weeks ago at the Vintage Cellars Fair. There were about 40 producers both local and overseas sharing their wines with the buying public. Big, established names from overseas like Ridge, Cattier, Segura Viudas, Henry Pelle, Vidal-Fleury and Ruggino and heaps of less well-known labels. What I most loved about the occasions was the camaraderie between the producers as they shared their enthusiasm for good wine. What is most important about the Vintage Cellars push is that they are making available, at very reasonable prices, the everyday wines of countries like France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Chile.
This 2008 Sieur de Camandieu Viognier is sourced from a long-established (1951) co-operative, the Cave de Pepieux which is situated in the Minervois about 30 minutes by road from Carcassone in France's Langedoc - Roussillon. For those who saw Rick Stein's French Odyssey it's close to Pierre Cros's winery at Badens and the Canal du Midi. This is an area where viognier does well so it's no surprise that this is a stunner: intensely fruity, clean, fresh and bright; delightfully floral, attractively viscous, long and satisfying. At the price, it's a steal.
