Quaffing bubbly from Australia

Here's a round up of the best quaffing bubblies on the market. I suspect that I saw most or all of the Aussie sparkling wines on the market in the tastings for Quaff – and I haven't seen any since that are better than those I wrote up for Quaff 2010.

If you are looking for some Christmas quaffers, here's a repeat of my recommendations for the book.

Jacobs Creek Blanc de Blancs Brut Cuvee $13.95

These two are the best Jacobs Creek bubblies in three years. As the French name suggests (blanc de blancs), this is made only from chardonnay grapes, has yeasty, biscuity flavours, a lively palate and a refreshing finish.

Jacobs Creek Chardonnay Pinot Noir $13.95

I particularly like the intense bready, yeasty flavours of this Chardonnay Pinot as well as its soft, gentle, creamy texture, bound together by bold natural acidity that zings. 

Deakin Chardonnay Pinot Noir Brut $9.95

As they often do, Deakin are performing better than you'd expect for a Murray Darling producer. There's intense yeastiness here,  a lively, fresh zesty mid-palate before a bright, crisp finish.

Omni Classic Sparkling $12.50

Surprisingly given that it is made by Ed Carr, Omni hasn't appeared in Quaff for three years. This is a welcome return to form. It's soft, round and easy drinking, has fresh appley flavours, some sweetness in the mid-palate before a lively, crisp, clean finish.

Seaview Brut de Brut $10.95

I haven't seen much of the Seaview bubblies for a few years and so it's great to see this old favourite looking outstanding. It's light, delicate and fresh with intense yeasty, bready, lemony flavours, finish zesty and long. Quaff on!
