2009 Montana Sauvignon Blanc
Friday, November 27, 2009 at 11:28AM I was in Sydney this week for the Air New Zealand Wine Awards. The results of the trophies had been announced two days beforehand at a dinner in Christchurch and we had a major tasting of all of the gold medal winners followed by an eight course degustation dinner at the excellent Assiette in Surry Hills. It was a major logistical exercise getting the top wines in front of the Australian press and trade and shows the marketing nous of the New Zealand Wine Growers. I particularly loved the riesling, gewurztraminer, sauvignon blanc and pinot and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Deutz Marlborough Cuvve sparkling wine, as well as the collection of syrah and cabernet. Villa Maria had the most sweeping array of gold medal wines.
Up pops the 2009 Montana Sauvignon Blanc again, this time as a gold medal winner in the Air New Zealand Wine Awards. It had already starred in my new release tastings at home and, as a result, I'd included it in Money Magazine's Best of the Best 2010. That issue is out next week and worth looking for.
Apart from enjoying the wine, I thought that a gold medal winner for less than $20 (the cut-off price for imported Quaff wines) was a bargain and worth shouting about on the website. What I particularly liked at the Air New Zealand tasting was the air of restraint about the 2009 Montana Sauvignon Blanc: not a bad characteristic for Kiwi sauvignon to show. Of course, there's plenty of intense tropical flavours (gooseberry, lychee, white peach), wonderful fruit purity and vibrant, taut, tangy acidity to finish.
