2009 De Bortoli 'Windy Peak' Classic White
Friday, November 20, 2009 at 11:41AM It's certainly been a brilliant year for De Bortoli and following their performance as Quaff's Winery of the Year, they've had two wines of the week - both new wines released for the first time under the Windy Peak label. Neither was available in time to be included in this year's edition of Quaff (the popular Christmas stocking filler). I think it's a pity about the term 'Classic White' but the marketers are right, it does sell.
This is a blend of sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio, semillon and vermentino - a crazy combination that somehow works remarkably well. You can be sure, knowing the De Bortoli team and seeing the results, that it wasn't just a case of slapping together whatever was left over and flogging it off. This is a clever blend where the varieties find synergy and produce a white that is clean, fresh and lively. It has a savoury character that works well with food - especially chicken stir fries with some Chinese, Thai or Vietnamese spices. There's a tanginess and vibrant zesty acidity to finish which refreshes.
