2008 Yalumba 'Y Series' Sangiovese Rosé
Friday, January 30, 2009 at 10:37AM I gave the 2007 a Bloody Good rating in Quaff 2009 and I am pleased to say that the following vintage is just as good. So it doesn't matter which you see at your local wine merchant's they are both terrific budget-priced rosés. Sangiovese seems to me an ideal grape for the rosé style because it has a natural savoury characters and so tends to taste drier, especially when the winemaker is careful not to leave too much residual sugar. This has a vibrant pink colour - winemaker, Andrew La Nauze, says that the natural colours were so good in the Barossa in 2008 that the grapes were held on their skins for a much shorter period than usual, and still got excellent colour. The 2008 Sangiovese Rosé is ripe, bright and bursting with attractive sweet redcurrant and red cherry flavours before a pleasant dryish finish. It's vibrant, clean and refreshing - an ideal summer drink.
