2007 Ferngrove Symbols Sauvignon Blanc Semillon
Saturday, September 8, 2007 at 10:42AM Well you may ask 'Where the bloody hell were you?' I know the website has been strangely silent for a few weeks. Humbly apologies. The person who has been delighted by my silence has been Jasmin Chua, my ferociously efficient and quietly terrifying editor at Hardie Grant who has responsibility for ensuring the safe arrival of Quaff 2008 on the shelves of all good bookstores earlyish in October. Some who are very close to me say that it's the same each year but I think that getting Quaff finished on time this year was my greatest challenge. So while I may not have been faithfully discharging my duties on the website, I have been working hard for the community of quaffers - those who love an excellent wine (or two) at a great price. One of the innovations in this year's Quaff is my list of the top 20 wines (in ranked order) under $15. Ferngrove have had a great year with Quaff although they've done well with this white in previous years: winning White Wine of the Year in Quaff 2005 with their 2004 vintage. I can leak the information (only to readers of the Quaff newsletter) that this wine is one of the top 20 in this year's book. It's a small amount of compensation to the followers of the website. I'll mention a few more highlights of the book over the next few weeks. Frankland River may be a remote sub-region of the Great Southern but it has produced some extraordinary wines over the past few years. Kim Horton and his team have been leading the charge with brilliant, succulent reds and bright, vibrant whites. This blend often takes some time to show its best - but not in 2007. There are fragrant floral, sweet pea and lavender aromas, juicy refreshing cool tropical flavours and bracing, crisp natural acidity. Enjoy this quintessential quaffer.
