Hardys Reserve Cask Cabernet Sauvignon
Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 6:29AM Comments: Since the Quaff website was set up, I've been keen to write up a cask wine at least once a year. It's generally been a note before the book comes out to let readers of the website know the cask wine of the year ahead of time. So that's what I'm doing. This year, I'm providing a short list for each of the awards so that readers can know which wines just missed out and get some idea of the thinking behind the selection process. For the cask wines, the shortlist for the award was: 2006 Yalumba ‘Reserve Selection’ Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2006 Yalumba ‘Reserve Selection’ Rosé Shiraz Hardys ‘Reserve’ Cabernet Sauvignon Hardys ‘Reserve’ Shiraz The Yalumba Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is the stand-out cask white once again. I love the style of the Yalumba Rosé and it’s my sentimental favourite. There’s little to choose between the two Hardys reds but I did point the Cabernet higher than the Shiraz and my comments were similarly more enthusiastic. The quality of the Hardys Cabernet Sauvignon cask makes it the 2008 Quaff Cask Wine of the Year. This is a very impressive cask wine: indeed, it’s a surprise packet. There’s heaps of bright, ripe red cherry and redcurrant flavours, soft, round, almost lush texture, so smooth and approachable drinking. 3 litres for $21.
