2007 Innocent Bystander Moscato
Saturday, September 22, 2007 at 10:52AM Comments: Well the good news is that Quaff 2008 has rolled off the press or at least advance copies of the book have seen the light of day. I haven't seen it yet but I'm told that I'll be very pleased with it. In the build up to the release of the book, I'm following tradition by selectively leaking information about some of its contents. I was in the Yarra Valley a week ago for a two-day seminar organised biannually by the Yarra Valley Vignerons. It's a great couple of days which, through blind tastings, gives us a useful insight into the wine styles that are emerging in the region. We had delightful lunches at Train Trak - great wood-fired oven pizzas - and De Bortoli, which does everything amazingly well. I particularly loved the focus on cheeses. The social and culinary highlight was my first glimpse since it has been finished of the Giants Steps complex in the main street of downtown Healesville. I doubt if anyone in Perth will ever forget the explosive impact that Phil Sexton had on the cafe scene in Perth. It should be much the same in the Yarra. The complex that Phil and Allison Sexton have developed is just amazing: winery, cellar door, bakery, coffee roasting, beer brewing: best of all excellent brasserie food. And the delicious 2007 Innocent Bystander Moscato on tap! I can reveal that this wine is one of my Top 20 wines in Quaff 2008. I think it's fabulous! The packaging into 375 ml bottles with crown seal and the tinge of pink in the wine set up the expectation. And the lightly bubbly, gently fragrant sweet fizz delivers Australia’s premier moscato. It’s vibrant, pristine, sweet and grapey, surprisingly fine, and finishes with bright cleansing acidity.
