2006 Hardy's 'Nottage Hill' Shiraz Viognier
Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 6:14PM I've seen a couple of decent and well-priced Nottage Hill wines recently and wanted to pass on the news. I've rated both as Good. Most of the wines that I've written up on the website this year have been worth the Bloody Good rating. This 2006 Hardys 'Nottage Hill' Shiraz Viognier has some ripe dark plum, black cherry and cedary oak flavours that have almost savoury (rather than fruity) overtones, velvety texture and substantial tannins. It is a bit oaky and a little heavy on the finish but, if you like that style, I think you'll find this good value for money (especially if you can find it on special). I also liked the 2009 Hardys 'Nottage Hill' Pinot Noir ($12.50) which is the first example of the variety under this label. It is sourced from the Riverland and the Murray Darling and is vinified in stainless steel. While not a great wine and not very typical of pinot noir, it does have some intriguing aromatics, is supple, even silky smooth, has savoury flavours and a pleasant dry finish. The 2009 Nottage Hill Pinot is light-bodied and is a pleasant drink. Fair value at the price.
